Catharsis

For this project, an existing coffee bar in Ghent was reimagined as either a restaurant or a fashion store for a chosen artist or chef.
The design focuses on translating the identity and vision of this individual into space, creating a concept where narrative and personality are reflected in the interior.

The design process started with an in-depth analysis of chef Rasmus Munk’s expressive creations and his vision on holistic dining. This led to the central concept of the project, summarized in one word: theatrical.

Inspired by the structure of an amphitheatre and combined with various visual references, the spatial concept evolved into a layered composition of different levels, placing the visitor within an amplified, expressive setting. The development of these volumes in SketchUp was a challenging and time-intensive process, due to the constraints of existing beams and columns within the building.

Catharsis reimagines the restaurant as a theatrical ritual rather than a place of consumption. Inspired by the structure of ancient Greek theatre, visitors enter collectively and are guided into a spatial narrative where food, scenography and architecture merge. A monumental curtain mediates between audience and kitchen, revealing moments of creation throughout the evening. Through choreography, atmosphere and storytelling, the project aims to evoke an emotional release — a contemporary catharsis shaped by taste, space and performance.

Catharsis explores the idea of purification through a contemporary and conceptual lens. The project combines research and visual experimentation to translate abstract themes into a clear and coherent outcome.

It reflects my process of working through complex ideas and shaping them into a focused visual result.
